Ralph Burtis - November 19, 2009
Ralph Edwin Burtis of Tracy, Calif. passed away on Nov. 15, 2009 at the age of 78.
He was born on Nov. 8, 1931 to George and Neva Kimberling Burtis near Imperial, Neb. in the family farmhouse. Ralph has lived in Tracy for years.
Ralph, in his younger years, attended District 6 school, and was active in the 4-H and FFA clubs. He graduated from Chase County High School in 1950, shortly after he married Lucille Haarberg on June 10, 1951.
Ralph farmed in Nebraska until 1955, and then moved to Turlock, Calif. In 1962, Ralph moved to Tracy, where he set up and managed a machine shop for Dave Petz until 1966, then worked for the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory as a machinist from 1966 to 1990.
Ralph served on the Tracy Police Reserves for 10 years. He was a Scoutmaster with Troop 505 for 10 years. He was an avid square dancer and a member of Valley Travelers, Tracy Tumbleweeds and the Trailer Twirlers square dancing and camping family for over 30 years.
Ralph was a member at St. Paul’s Church where he did maintenance, gardening and held various offices over the years.
After retirement he and his wife traveled to several foreign countries. He later worked for 9 years as a Project Manager for Laborers for Christ (building churches, colleges, high schools and camp grounds) which took them to various areas in the United States.
Ralph is survived by his wife, Lucille Burtis of Tracy, Calif.; his children, Deanna Foggiato and Delores Ohm and her spouse, Loren Ohm, and a daughter-in-law, Roxann Burtis; 11 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and his siblings, Leona Taylor and Donald Burtis, both of Sheridan, Wyo.
He is preceded in death by his children, Rodney Burtis and Debra Burtis; his siblings, Elva Reed, Dean Burtis, Robert Burtis and Hubert Glen Burtis.
Memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 1635 Chester Dr., Tracy, Calif. and burial will be private.
