Leigh John Gage - November 19, 2009
?Leigh John Gage died unexpectedly on Nov. 12, 2009 in Yukon, Oklahoma. Leigh was born to Lyle and Ilo Gage on March 1, 1934 at a farm in Hitchcock County, Nebraska.
?After moving to Wauneta, Leigh attended Wauneta schools where he met the love of his life and future wife in the seventh grade. In high school, he lettered in football and basketball and was selected as a guard on the World Herald All-State Football Team.
?Following his graduation from Wauneta High School in 1952, Leigh attended McCook Junior College where he played football for the Indians. In 1954, Leigh took a teaching position at Enders, Nebraska.
?In 1955, he married Barbara Ann Wallace, who was his beloved wife and remained his life companion until his death.
?Leigh, Barbara, and their first son Kenneth moved to McCook to work for Wallace Construction in 1961. While living in McCook, a second son Brian was born. In 1978, Leigh accepted a construction management position with a subsidiary of Peter Kiewit and Sons in Wichita, Kansas, where he and his family lived briefly until accepting another management position with the same company in the Oklahoma City area in 1981. Leigh remained in this position until his retirement in Yukon, Oklahoma in1989. ?
?Leigh will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was known to his family and friends as a quiet, intelligent, and hardworking man who approached life in a practical, no-nonsense manner. Although he possessed a strong, proud demeanor, he was unfailingly kind and thoughtful to others. His dry sense of humor was often unexpected but inevitably appreciated. Above all, his wife, family, and friends will miss the caring person who was always there to shoulder the load, provide common sense solutions for life’s problems, and give others a sense of security and hope during trying times.
He had many hobbies including hunting, fishing and woodworking.
?Leigh is survived by his wife Barbara, his sons Kenneth and Brian, and their wives, Sherry and LeAnn, respectively, as well as his grandsons John and Garrett. Other survivors include his brothers Norman Gage, Keith Gage, and Rodger Gage, as well as his half-sister Aloha Gates and their families.
