Daniel Liebig - December 14, 2008


Daniel G. Liebig, 85, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2008, at Heritage of Wauneta.
He was born Aug. 27, 1923, in Platte Center, Neb., to Adolph and Mary Liebig. His birth order was 10th of 11 children.
Dan attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School. After completing his sophomore year in high school, he began farming full-time on the family farm.
He met Joanne Weston in June, 1946 and they were married in Sutton, Neb., on June 14, 1949.
An opportunity to farm and ranch near Wauneta, Neb., arose in early 1953. After making the decision to relocate, Dan farmed at the current homestead for one year before moving Joanne and their two sons in January, 1954.
He was an active member in the National Farmers Organization for several years. He loved all aspects of his occupation, always looking for ways to improve the operation. Dan was a skilled welder. He had a strong mechanical aptitude for creating and building whatever was needed on the farm.
Dan raised his own beef and hogs that he processed each year. He produced and smoked his own sausage from family recipes. Raising wheat and cattle were his two primary products during his 65 years of farming and ranching.
Over the years, he planted many trees, including apple, pear and peach trees. He enjoyed reading farm and ranch journals. In his later years he loved working in his shop.
Dan was an active member of St. John’s Catholic Church. He appreciated attending family gatherings in Platte Center. He always looked forward to visits from his children and grandchildren.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Adolph and Mary Liebig; five brothers and three sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Joanne; children: Thomas Liebig of Littleton, Colo., Paul Liebig and wife, Jan, of Kearney, Neb., Mary Kay and husband, Forrest Lauher, of Beaumont, Texas, Rosanne and husband, Bill Benzel, of Waynesville Mo.; grandchildren: Lacy Saunders, Kristin Liebig, Laura Liebig, Alison Benzel, Lindsay Lauher, Deane Lauher, Lauren Lauher, Eric Lauher and Lauren Koetter; two sisters: Lillian and husband, Joe Cucarola, of Sterling, Colo., and Elizabeth Egger of St. Edwards, Neb.
Dan and Joanne were married for 59 years.
Funeral services will be today, Dec. 18, 2008, at 10 a.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Wauneta. Father Val Bartek will celebrate the funeral mass.
Interment will be at the Wauneta Riverside Cemetery.
A Rosary will be recited Wednesday evening, Dec. 17, at 7 p.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church of Wauneta.
Visitation was held Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 17 from 2-6 p.m. at the funeral home in Wauneta before the Rosary.
Memorials may be given to Heritage of Wauneta.
