Chase County Fairgoers will have the chance to eat bratwurst and feel good about it this year. The Orphan Grain Train is sponsoring a bratwurst feed Wednesday, Aug. 12 before the Christian Family Show.
The feed is a fundraising activity for the Orphan Grain Train, which provides clothing, blankets, shoes and more for victims of disasters nationwide.
It was originally begun by the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, but helps people of any denomination, according to Pastor David Kahle of Zion Lutheran Church of Imperial.
Originally set up to provide clothing, Pastor Kahle said the grain train is “the first program on the ground in these places,” such as areas devastated by tsunamis, hurricanes, or tornados, such as Windsor, Colo. last summer.
Secretary Carol Piehl of the Rocky Mountain Division out of Julesburg, Colo., said she and her husband will be bringing a truck to collect “good, clean clothing, put in plastic bags,” during the fair. The truck will be parked by the bratwurst feed, near the old beef barn on the fairgrounds.
The feed will be held from 5-7 p.m. Five dollars will buy a bratwurst or hot dog, sauerkraut, chips, dessert and a drink. All proceeds will help fund ship containers and truck transportation of the goods for disaster victims.
Area churches will provide the labor for the feed.
Piehl said the Orphan Grain Train’s website is www.ogt.org. Find the regional division icon, then click on Rocky Mountain Division for more information.
