A third place plaque from the SPVA Conference Basketball Tournament isn’t bad for a team that was seeded No. 6.
Beating No. 3 Bridgeport early last week, then a victory over No. 5 Sutherland in the consolation game Saturday lifted the Lady Longhorns to the girls’ division third place finish.
Chase County lost its semi-final contest to Kimball, who then squeezed by top-seeded North Platte St. Pat’s 54-53 in Saturday’s championship game to take the title.
Coach Mark Bottom was certainly happy with the third place finish. It was the team’s fourth win in its last six games.
“We just need to keep the momentum going now,” he said.
After hosting undefeated Haxtun, Colo., Tuesday night, the Lady Longhorns will be back in Bridgeport Friday after last week’s trip for the opening SPVA game.
In that one a week and a half ago, Chase County upset Bridgeport by three, 47-44, to move on to the
SPVA semi-finals.
Coach Bottom said his team will have to play well again to win Friday’s game.
Games in Bridgeport Friday start at 4 p.m. with JV action, followed by girls’ and boys’ varsity action.
The varsity has a break until Tuesday, when they will host Wray, Colo., who was 4-3 early this week. Action Tuesday starts at 4 p.m. with the JV games.
A couple of 9-10 (C) games are also on the schedule in the coming week.
A 9-10 game has been added for this Friday at Hershey, which gets underway at 5 p.m. MT. A boys’ 9-10 game will follow.
The Lady Longhorns will also be in Grant to face Perkins County in a 9-10 contest on Monday starting at 5:30 p.m. A boys’ game is also scheduled after the girls.
SPVA game vs. Sutherland
A 14-point unanswered run in the second quarter was a big factor in Chase County’s come-from-behind 44-36 win over Sutherland for third place.
After a sluggish first quarter with just three points on the board, Chase County put up 18 in the second, surging to a 21-19 halftime lead. Ten of the second quarter points were scored by Ragan Nickless.
Trailing 3-15 a minute into the second quarter, the Lady Longhorns scored 14 straight to lead 17-15 with 2:50 left before half.
A Sutherland bucket with 15 seconds left tied the game at 19, before Nickless hit a pair of free throws with eight seconds until half.
Opening strong in the third quarter with seven unanswered points, Chase County went up 28-19. They held onto a 31-25 lead after three.
Sutherland’s Kayla Cheever hit a trey a minute into the fourth to pull the Lady Sailors within three again, 31-28, but that would be the closest they’d get.
As Sutherland was forced to foul in the final minutes of the game, free throws became key for Chase County.
And, this time, the Lady Longhorns were successful at the line, especially Josie Peterson, who was 6-6 in the final four minutes. She scored eight of her 10 points those final eight minutes.
Overall in the final quarter, Chase County hit seven of 12 free throws.
Coach Bottom said his team’s diamond press worked well against Sutherland, and their consistency and confidence on offense came through in the second quarter.
He said Peterson, in addition to her fourth quarter free throw shooting, also did a great job defending Erica Hopping, Sutherland’s scoring leader, who was held to 11.
Nickless led all scorers in the game with 14, joining Peterson in double figures.
In other stats, Destiny Reinke was a force on defense with five steals. She and McNair each had three assists, while Nickless led in rebounds with 10.
From two-point range, Chase County hit 15-51 for 29 percent.
Sutherland hit the game’s only two treys, both in the fourth quarter.

SPVA game vs. Kimball
Chase County never got their offense going in last Thursday’s semi-final game, losing to Kimball, 54-24.
The Lady Longhorns trailed the entire game after scoring just one bucket the first quarter.
Coach Bottom said that’s the most his team has struggled this season.
Chase County was held to single digit scoring three of the four quarters. Kimball was a force beyond the arc, hitting seven in the game while Chase County was 0-8. Kimball also shot 45 percent from the field.
From two-point range, Chase County hit 12-48 for 25 percent and was 0-4 at the line.
Scoring leader for Chase County was Allison Owings with six. McNair brought down six rebounds and had three steals in the contest.
