Our Lady of Guadalupe celebrated PDF Print E-mail

Local residents remembered the appearance of Our Lady of Guadalupe to Juan Diego in 1531 at the annual celebration of her Dec. 12 feast day in the Catholic Church. Above, they braved chilly conditions Sunday morning as the procession moved through the streets of Imperial honoring Our Lady of Guadalupe, who is the patroness of the Americas. Below left, fifth graders Kayla Chavira and Bryan Cazares depict Our Lady of Guadalupe and Juan Diego, as other participants carry her banner. After the procession, the group attended mass at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, enjoyed Cinco de Mayo traditional Mexican dancing and a play telling the story of Mary’s appearance to Diego in central Mexico, followed by a meal. The Los Matachines, whose dancing tells the story of Central American Aztec Indians’ conversion to Christianity as well as their thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest and other gifts, performed in the parish hall, as well.
