Longhorns still looking for first win PDF Print E-mail

Longhorns boys’ coach Carl Zuege knew his team would have their hands full with the Sidney Red Raiders Friday.
But he still figured the Longhorns could come out of the weekend with a win against Ogallala Saturday night. He was right on one count.
The Longhorns did have their hands full at Sidney as they pretty much dominated the locals, cruising to 67-35 win.
The Red Raiders brought back much of their team that finished as the state runner-up in Class B last season.  As a result, Zuege knew it would be a tough challenge for his team.
What Zuege didn’t expect dropping a 48-54 decision to the Ogallala Indians.
He came away feeling it was a game the Longhorns should have won.
But it was Ogallala that made 10 of 15 free throws in the final quarter to make the difference in the game.
The Longhorns went 4-6 at the line and 18-25 for the game but only got to the line five times in the final eight minutes compared to eight times for the Indians.
While they shot 72 percent at the line, they finished just 28 percent from the field. They hit 12 of 37 inside the arc and only 2 of 13 from outside the arc.
Despite that, the Longhorns held leads after the first three quarters, 7-3, 23-20 and 37-35. A shot by Dakota Wallin at the buzzer gave the Longhorns their 37-35 lead going into the final quarter.
The two teams battled back and forth in the fourth quarter with the lead changing hands six times in the first five and a a half minutes of the period.
Jared Sharp tied the game 45-45 with a jumper inside at the 2:58 mark.
With 2:27 left in the game, Eli Engbrecht gave the Longhorns a 47-46 lead, a lead that proved to be their last.
Engbrecht would hit one of two free throws with :31 left to wrap up the Longhorns’ scoring.
Over the final three minutes, the Indians scored all but two of the nine points from the line.
Down the stretch, the Longhorns couldn’t get the ball to fall nor could they draw a foul to get to the line.
Ike Maxwell paced the team with 16 points, including a pair of treys and a 6-6 effort at the line, along with five rebounds.
Walling finished in double figures with 13 while Sharp scored 10.
At Sidney, the Red Raiders took a 23-6 lead after the first quarter and the Longhorns could never get back into it.
Destyn Milner led the team offensively with 14 points. Sharp led the attack on the boards with six rebounds.
Thus far, the combined record of the four teams the Longhorns have fallen to now stands at 16-1.
Yuma tonight
