Except for their first game of the season in late May, Imperial’s Pee Wee 2 baseball team has won all of its games this season.
The season has been highlighted with six consecutive wins since June 3, most recently a 13-12 victory Sunday in the bottom of the fifth against Hayes Center.
With four games this week and an added game Tuesday, July 7, the team will play in the league tournament July 9-13 in Hershey.
Head Coach Bob Milner said his team has really come together in the last few weeks, crediting that cohesiveness for their string of wins. He also said all of their pitchers continue to improve.
In their most recent outing Sunday at Schroeder Park, the home team fell behind 11-0 after Hayes Center’s first at-bat.
But, Imperial 2 chipped away at the deficit, scoring every inning of the game except the fourth, and holding Hayes Center to only one more run.
As Imperial 2 entered the bottom of the fifth, they still trailed 10-12. After Imperial’s first batter struck out, Curtis Laird walked, Dan Sullivan singled and Kevin German doubled.
That was followed up by a single and double from Trey Milner and Tyler Oxford to end the game as the necessary three runs scored, with two outs to spare.
After a 13-4 loss to Paxton on May 27, the Imperial team went on to defeat Imperial 1 20-15, Wallace 11-1, Grant 15-4, Ogallala Orange 8-7, Ogallala Black 18-11 and Hayes Center 13-12.
Sporting a 6-1 record after Sunday, Imperial 2 concludes its regular season with four games in Tri-County League play this week, and the added game with Wauneta next week.
Their upcoming game schedule, which included a contest in Hershey Tuesday, is as follows. Home games are at Schroeder Park:
July 1—at Sutherland, 6 p.m. MT
July 2—Sutherland here, 6 p.m. MT
July 3—at Grant, 6 p.m. MT
July 7—Wauneta, here 6 p.m. MT
A recap of the Pee Wee 1 team’s season will be in next week’s issue.
