This year’s Chase County Longhorn football team complied a year to remember.
After going 5-3 last year and missing the playoffs, the Longhorns went 7-1 in the regular season, won the district championship and qualified for the C1 playoffs.
Coach Dan Lenners said his seniors provided the leadership to keep the team headed toward their goals.
This year’s squad included just six seniors. By the end of the season, they where down to four due to injuries. Adrian Foreman went down with a knee injury and Joe Tomky injured a shoulder/collarbone.
Looking forward, Coach Dan Lenners will be tasked with filling the holes left by this year’s seniors.
While they lose some skill position players, the cupboard’s certainly not bare.
Caleb Weiss will step in at the quarterback spot on the offense and all of the backfield returns. That includes junior Bryson Fisher.
While he missed some playing time due to a knee issue, he battled back and led the team in rushing.
He finished the season with 1,396 yards, averaging six yards per carry and 155 yards per game.
Milner added another 338 yards, followed by Jorge Cervantes with 176 and Dakota Wallin with 103 yards.
The Longhorns’ ground game still played the key role in their success this year.
They averaged nearly 250 yards per game on the ground and another 84 in the air.
A total of 22 touchdowns came on the run while eight came in the air.
Milner accounted for seven of those touchdowns, completing 42 of 99 passes for a 42 percent completion rate.
Sophomore tight end Jack Bauerle proved to be Milner’s favorite target with 13 receptions for 223 yards and a touchdown.
Hunter Dillan tallied nine receptions for 189 yards and three touchdowns. Weiss hauled in eight passes for 167 yards.
Defensively, Zac Space and Dakota Wallin led the team with a total of 63 tackles each.
Cervantes led the team in solo tackles with 21, followed by Milner with 15 and Weiss with 15.
Captains elected
Following the final game at Ashland, team members elected the four seniors who finished the season as their captains.
They included Eli Engbrecht, Destyn Milner, Hunter Dillan and Taylor Wilson.
