Fifty seven-year-old Michael D. Kosmicki of Grant died Saturday, Aug. 15 from injuries he sustained in a two vehicle accident fives miles west and two miles south of Grant, according to Perkins County Sheriff Jim Brueggeman.
The Perkins County Sheriff’s Office, Perkins County Ambulance, along with the Grant and Madrid fire departments were dispatched to the accident at 8:49 a.m. that involved a pickup and an all-terrain vehicle.
The accident occurred near a county road hilltop one-half mile east of Perkins County Road 333 and Road 758.
Kosmicki was west bound on Road 758 driving a 2014 Coleman Trail Tamer 400 four wheel all-terrain vehicle. He was hit by a 1972 Chevrolet C-10 pickup traveling eastbound driven by 16-year-old Jeremy Doolittle of rural Madrid, Brueggeman said.
Kosmicki was transported from the accident scene by the Perkins County Ambulance to Perkins County Health Services in Grant where he was pronounced deceased from injuries he sustained in the accident, Brueggeman said.
Doolittle reported receiving no injuries in the accident and declined transportation to the hospital, Brueggeman said.
According to Brueggeman, it is believed neither Kosmicki nor Doolittle were utilizing safety equipment at the time of the accident. Alcohol and drugs are not considered to be factors in the accident.
The Perkins County Sheriff’s Office and the Nebraska State Patrol are conducting the accident investigation, which remains ongoing.
Sheriff Jim Brueggeman reminds those traveling on county roads this time of year to exercise extreme caution.
“We urge all motorists to obey speed laws and drive appropriate speeds for current weather and road conditions,” he said.
He also reminds motorists to drive in the appropriate lane for the direction of travel and stay in their lane and be aware of their surroundings.
“This is especially true at intersections where visibility can sometimes be diminished by tall crops, signs, poles or vehicles and equipment being parked in the vicinity,” he said.
Kosmicki has worked as a yardman for Imperial Auction Market for a number of years.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held today (Thursday) Aug. 20 at 10:30 a.m. at Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church in Grant.
