Learning about Holy Spirit focus of book

For years, United Methodist Pastor Valera Heydenberk could never find a good children’s book that addressed the Holy Spirit for children. So, she wrote one herself.
The Heydenberks will introduce the new book to Imperial Saturday with a book signing at the Lied Imperial Public Library.
The event will begin at 10 a.m. in the library’s meeting room.
Her husband Jerry, a retired Methodist pastor, illustrated the book with water color paintings.
The first 25 pages of the book give children a closer look at who the Holy Spirit of God is and how they can experience the Holy Spirit in their lives.
A parent’s guide makes up the final four pages of the book, providing parents with insight on the Holy Spirit along with biblical references.
Valera said she didn’t learn of the power of the Holy Spirit until in her 30s. She wonders how much better parents they could have been to their children had she had an earlier relationship with the Holy Spirit.
That was one of the motivations for writing the book, so other parents could get an earlier start to knowing and sharing the Holy Spirit with their children.
The basis for the book revolves around Isaiah 11:1-3 (NIV): “1A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. 2 The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him—the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord—
3 and he will delight in the fear of the Lord.”
Heydenberk unveiled the book at the annual United Methodist Great Plains Conference last week in Wichita, Kan.
She said she has already had requests to translate the book into Spanish, Portuguese, Mandarin and African languages.
Money raised from the book will be used to support children’s missions throughout other countries.
The first $500 they made from sales during annual conference went to Partners for Mission which serves Nigeria, Haiti and Zimbabwe.
The cost of the book is $14.99 and will be available during the book signing. It will also be for sale at The Imperial Republican.
