Cinco de Mayo celebrated with dancing PDF Print E-mail

Imperial celebrated the Cinco de Mayo holiday a little early with a program and meal at Chase County Schools Friday night.  Here, a group of youthful dancers takes its bow after their number in the school auditorium. Thirty-three youths five years old to high school age formed groups, each of which performed two dances. Following the program, all enjoyed a meal and pinata in the commons area. Instructing the dancers was Carmina Juarez of Imperial, who worked with nine boys and 24 girls. Many in the community were involved in the celebration, too, sewing the girls’ costumes. Cinco de Mayo, or the 5th of May, commemorates the Mexican Army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. In the U.S., Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage. (Republican photo)
