Chase County’s track teams are headed to a new season opener this year, a quadrangular in Grant hosted by Perkins County.
Besides Chase County and the hosts, other teams in Grant today (Thursday ) will be Dundy County/Stratton and South Platte.
The Cambridge Invitational, Chase County’s opening meet the past several years, was moved to Monday, April 13, this year which did not work into Chase County’s schedule, said Activities Director and Head Girls’ Track Coach Troy Hauxwell.
Events Thursday start at 3 p.m. with the field events.
The first running event, the 3200 meter relay, is set for a 3:45 p.m. start. The 100 meter hurdles start the track events at 4 p.m. On the track, girls’ events will be run first, followed by boys.
Individuals will be limited to four events and teams can enter as many athletes in each event as they choose. No team scores will be tallied or individual medals given.
For field events, each athlete will have four jumps or throws with no finals. Placing in the running events will be based on heat times only.
Both head coaches think the change is a good one.
Head Boys’ Coach Carl Zuege noted the weather often played havoc at Cambridge, cancelling the meet several times the past five years.
And, the team numbers at Cambridge had been dropping.
“I think this is a good change in the schedule,” he said.
Hauxwell said it will be a plus Thursday to get everyone in the meet since entries are unlimited.
“We’re excited to get out and get going,” he said.
The next big meet on the Chase County schedule is next Thursday, April 2, at the Ogallala Invitational. It’s being held on Thursday instead of Saturday due to Easter.
