Imperial’s senior girls’ softball team is 2-1 so far this season as it competes in the Tri-County South League. Coach is Denise Smith.
The team opened its season May 28 with a 12-4 win at Atwood, Kan., and followed that up with another win, 8-5, over Benkelman. Imperial suffered its first loss last Thursday to Wauneta, 8-6.
Kacia Smith has been handling most of the pitching duties so far this season, but Lexee Reichert and Taylor Wilson are also seeing some innings from the mound.
Against Atwood, Imperial tallied seven hits, led by Dee Dee Pursley, who was 3-4 with two doubles. Smith also had a pair of hits including a triple, while Paula Leibbrandt and Reichert each added a single.
Imperial took a 7-0 first inning lead against Benkelman on the Imperial field June 2, but then had some trouble at the plate, popping up a lot of hits, said Coach Smith.
Benkelman was able to get back into the game as four batters walked and they recorded a pair of hits in one inning, but Imperial was able to hold them off for the 8-5 win.
Last Thursday, Imperial lost an 8-6 game at Wauneta.
While Imperial tallied eight hits in the game, they didn’t come at key times for scoring runs, Coach Smith said. Again, Imperial batters popped up a lot of pitches against Wauneta’s slower pitcher.
Hitting for Imperial in that game were Kacia Smith, who went 2-3; April Bernard, single and triple; Taylor Wilson, single and double; Reichert, a double; and Pursley, a single.
Upcoming games
Imperial was scheduled to host Atwood, Kan., in Imperial Tuesday night this week.
Tonight (Thursday), Imperial will be in Benkelman for a 6:30 p.m. game, and will be home next Thursday, June 18, for a makeup game with Wauneta at 5:30 p.m. at Imperial’s Schroeder Park.
The league’s end-of-season tournament is scheduled June 20 in Atwood, Kan.
Coach Smith is trying to schedule some additional games with area teams, such as Holyoke, Colo.        Smith also serves as coach for the high school softball team at Chase County Schools.
