During two FFA Career Development Event (CDE) contests this spring, the Imperial FFA chapter earned several spots at the state convention to be held April 8-10 in Lincoln.
At the March 3 competition, the Food Science team of Mindy Castle, MaKenna Ketter, Jessica Hartman and Kayla Schilke won top honors, earning the district championship. The team took the top four individual spots, with Castle winning the district championship.
The Ag Sales team took district runner-up honors, also qualifying for state. The team included Travis Luhrs, Hartman, Cade Francis and Darin Knobbe.
The welding team earned third place, also qualifying for state. Members include Taylor Wilson, Caleb Bubak and Kevin Chavira. Wilson individually took first place in the oxy acetylene division.
On Feb. 11 the Farm Business Management team of Hartman, Wilson, Joel DaMoude and Castle took second place, qualifying for state.
Both CDE contests were held at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in Curtis.
According to FFA Advisor Jeremy Vlasin, the purpose of the events is “to help students obtain skill sets from different agricultural careers and maybe find one they would like to pursue.”
The chapter entered 38 students in the two contests.
“One thing I noticed this year is that our district is becoming a lot more competitive,” Vlasin said. “In the March 3 contest not one chapter won more than one event.”
He added, “Our district has a good crop of ag teachers that do a good job to make these events competitive.”
Vlasin said the competitiveness teaches students to work hard for good results.
