Two-point third Horns’ undoing against Chadron PDF Print E-mail

Longhorns finish
season with 19-6 record

“One quarter kind of undid us,” Longhorns Head Coach Carl Zuege said, looking back at the team’s subdistrict final loss to the Chadron Cardinals last Thursday.
The quarter Zuege was referring to was the third quarter, when the Longhorns scored just two points.
At the other end, Chadron sophomore Vonsinh Sayaloune lit it up, hitting three treys to open the third quarter for the Cardinals.
By the end of the quarter, Chadron held a 19-point, 23-42 advantage over the Longhorns.
The Longhorns got it back to 11 in the final two minutes before going down 43-59.
Chadron puts an athletic team on the floor, Zuege said. “They are a good team.”
They evidenced that Monday night by defeating a 22-2 Ainsworth 62-51 to represent the C1-6 district at next week’s state tournament.
Zuege said the loss was “certainly disappointing.” But overall, the Longhorns experienced a very good year, he added.
The Longhorns finished with 19 wins against just six losses. The 19-6 mark represented Zuege’s best record over his eight-year career as the Longhorn’s head coach.
All six of this year’s losses came at the hands of Division 1 wildcard-point teams, including two losses to Class B Sidney. Of the five teams the Longhorns lost to, four will be going to the state tournament.
Looking back, three losses in mid-January to Southern Valley, Gothenburg and to Bridgeport in the SPVA semis  knocked the Longhorns out of a chance for a wildcard to the state tournament.
“Winning any two of those three would have got us there,” Zuege said.
Nonetheless, he said the Longhorns finished the season with big wins by avenging their loss to Bridgeport and defeating St. Pat’s and Holyoke.
This year’s seniors had never beaten St. Pat’s or Holyoke at the varsity level.
10-point first quarter lead
Things looked to be going the Longhorns’ way in the opening quarter at Alliance in the subdistrict final.
Travis Luhrs hit back-to-back treys midway in the quarter for an 8-2 lead.
Isaac Sorensen added back-to-back buckets and Jared Sharp backed one in off the glass to give the Longhorns a 14-4 lead with 1:25 left in the first.
Chadron answered with a trey and got a shot to drop at the buzzer to pull back within five, 14-9.
The Longhorns could only score seven in the second quarter while Chadron hit three treys to boost them to a 23-21 halftime lead.
And then the third quarter happened.
Chadron’s Sayaloune hit a deep trey to open the second half. He added back-to-back treys to give Chadron a 21-32 lead with 4:48 left in the third.
The Longhorns couldn’t get the ball to fall. Their only two points came at the 3:36 mark when Kelton Fisher downed a pair of free throws to keep the Longhorns within 11, 23-34.
From there on, Chadron ran off eight more unanswered points to take a 19-point 23-42 lead in the final quarter.
From there, Chadron protected their lead, forcing the Longhorns to foul down the stretch. Of the Cardinal’s 17 fourth-quarter points, 13 came from the line as they went 13-19  to ice the game.
Offensively, the Longhorns were led by Luhrs with 14, followed by Jeff Dickey with 12.
