Chase County’s Longhorns closed out the regular season with an  18-5 mark after defeating Sutherland Friday night 49-26.
They followed that up Tuesday night with a 56-35 win over Ogallala in the first round of the C1-12 subdistricts at Alliance.
One of the Longhorns’ biggest games to date comes tonight (Thursday) when they play a 16-7 Chadron team for the subdistrict title.
Chadron defeated Mitchell 59-26 on the other side of the subdistrict bracket Tuesday night.
They come into the game with a 16-7 mark. All seven of their losses have been to Class B teams in the western end of the state and South Dakota.
Tonight’s match-up with Chadron has been circled on the Longhorns’ calendar for much of the season. They know they have to get by Chadron to continue a post-season run.
The winner of tonight’s game will likely play Ainsworth, the top seed in the C1-11 subdistrict. That game will be held Monday March 2 at a site to be determined.
The winner of that game punches their ticket to the boys’ state tournament in Lincoln March 12-14.
So the Longhorns know just how big their game with Chadron is.
Sutherland
The Longhorns jumped on Sutherland from the outset. With a 7-4 lead four minutes into the game, the Longhorns ran off 13 unanswered points for a 20-4 lead after one period.
They widened the lead to 20 at half, 30-10, and never looked back.
Coach Carl Zuege said it was a good win to close out the season and allowed him to get all the seniors on the floor in the second half during their last home game as Longhorns.
His starting five never left the bench in the fourth as the Longhorns capped an 18-5 regular season with a 49-26 win.
Travis Luhrs hit a total of five 3-pointers to lead the team in scoring with 20. Jeff Dickey also finished in double figures with 12.
