Five road games in eight days took toll

Following an exciting two-point win in the C1-12 subdistrict opener on Feb. 16, Chase County’s Lady Longhorns fell to Mitchell the next night, ending their season at 14-11.
Coach Mark Bottom, in his first year at the helm, said according to records he’s seen, their 14-11 finish this year is one of the best in years.
He credits a strong senior class with good leaders and a team that worked well together. Now, the focus will be on next year and what successes will carry over to the 2015-16 season.
After the 53-51 defeat of Gordon/Rushville Feb. 16, coming on a eight-foot shot from Josie Peterson in the closing seconds, the Lady Longhorns returned to Alliance the next night to face Mitchell.
Chase County stayed with top-seeded Mitchell in the first half, trailing by just four as they went to the locker rooms.
But after scoring just a bucket from MaKenna Ketter and a free throw from Destiny Reinke in the third quarter, Chase County was in too deep of a hole as Mitchell put up 16 points that quarter.
The offense picked up fourth quarter with 17 points, seven of those from Taylin McNair, but Mitchell added another 24 to take a lopsided 67-41 win.
“We did everything right in that game,” Coach Bottom said. “But, we were just a step behind.”
He felt having to travel for the last three regular season games the week before, then back-to-back trips to Alliance Feb. 16-17 for subdistricts took its toll on his team.
“If we had been rested, it wouldn’t have been a 26-point game,” he said.
He didn’t want to take anything away from Mitchell, saying they are a very good team that does a lot of things well. He said they have good shooters and they rebound well.
Chase County also missed senior starter Valeria Cervantes in post-season play. She tore her ACL in the regular season game at Wauneta on Feb. 10. Coach Bottom said Mitchell would have had difficulty matching up with her.
McNair led Chase County’s scoring in the Mitchell game with 17. Paige Spady and Reinke each added six.

Mitchell falls to Chadron
