Girls’ regular season wins equal best in 15 years PDF Print E-mail

Thirteen wins in a season hasn’t been seen on the Lady Longhorn varsity girls’ record for 15 years.
After winning Friday and Saturday in Holyoke, Colo., and Hershey to complete the regular season, Chase County’s girls pushed their season record to 13-10.
And, that was with the subdistrict tournament ahead.
The last time the Lady Longhorns had 13 wins came in the 1999-2000 season, when the team finished 13-9.
The girls’ varsity also had 13 wins in the 1997-98 season (13-8).
Depending on how Chase County does in subdistricts, Coach Mark Bottom may have to go back a bit further to find as many wins.
Chase County lost a heartbreaking, two-point game at Wauneta/Palisade Feb. 10 starting off a week of three games, all on the road.
But what hurt more than the defeat was the loss of senior starter Valeria Cervantes, who tore her ACL and suffered additional knee damage in the first quarter at Wauneta.
Cervantes suffered the injury after scrambling for a ball headed out-of-bounds. In addition to the ACL tear, her knee’s meniscus was also damaged, Coach Bottom said. She and her family were meeting with a surgeon this week, he said.
The team is missing her contributions, Bottom said, especially on defense.
“She played the middle of our zone defense and was very good at it,” he said.
She also contributed strongly on rebounds.
Makenna Wallin was moved to a starting role in Cervantes’ absence. What Wallin lacks in height compared to Cervantes she makes up in quickness, the coach said.
Taylar Nickless and Kadyn Milner have increased their roles on the team, as well, he said.
Wauneta/Palisade game
It was a heartbreaking loss, 55-57, at Wauneta/Palisade last Tuesday.
“They were one of the better teams we’ve played to work our zone defense,” Bottom said.
“They were disciplined.”
After Cervantes went down in the first quarter, Bottom said it took too long to compensate and move players around.
Chase County had a three-point halftime lead, but hit a quarter of cold shooting in the third, scoring just seven.
They regrouped and put up 23 in the fourth, but it was two points shy of catching the Lady Broncos. They scored 19 the final eight minutes.
Destiny Reinke had a good night of three-point shooting, hitting four treys and finishing with 18 points. Taylin McNair added 19, three of her points coming from a trey.
Teamwise, Chase County shot 18 of 38 (47 percent) from two-point range. At the line, they were four of 10, for 40 percent.
Wauneta/Palisade finished the regular season at 18-5.

Holyoke game
Chase County took a 48-33 win at Holyoke, Colo., Friday.
Nine girls contributed on offense. Coach Bottom said that’s great to see that many on the board.
“We played good defense at Holyoke,” he said.
He said the team really rallied behind Cervantes, too, who they missed in the lineup after her injury early in the week.
It was a close first quarter as the teams were knotted at 10 after eight minutes. But, Chase County then outscored the Lady Dragons the rest of the night.
McNair led all scorers in the game with 16, 10 of them coming the first half. Paige Spady added eight.
No other game stats were available.

Hershey game
In their final regular season game, the Lady Longhorns made a strong statement with a 50-37 win at Hershey Saturday.
Chase County led the entire game, as Hershey struggled with several players out due to injury and illness, Coach Bottom noted.
Reinke and McNair were in double figures to lead the scoring with 12 and 11, respectively.
Reinke again turned in a night with four treys.
Chase County was off a bit from two-point range, making nine of 36 for 25 percent.
But, the team tallied six treys, the other two coming from Josie Peterson and McNair, and also shot better on free throws, dropping in 14 of 20 for 70 percent.
MaKenna Ketter had a strong night on the boards, bringing down nine. Spady had three assists and two steals.
