The Chase County Longhorns avenged one of their five losses Friday night, defeating the 14-4 Bridgeport Bulldogs 55-47 on the Longhorns’ home court.
The Bulldogs derailed the Longhorns’ hopes for an SPVA title in this year’s conference tournament, with a three-point win in the semi-finals.
It also meant another long-awaited match-up with North Platte St. Pat’s had to wait until this Friday’s regular season meeting here.
Friday’s win improved the Longhorns’ record to 12-5, counting a 59-47 win over Haxtun, Colo., there Tuesday, Jan. 27.
The Longhorns added another Tuesday night win this week over Wray, Colo., 66-28, to move to 13-5 for the season.
With Tuesday’s game at Wray behind them, the Longhorns can turn their focus to this week’s face-off with conference rival St. Pat’s, who comes in at 18-1.
Coach Carl Zuege said the Longhorns are ready for a real meaningful game like St. Pat’s. There’s no problem in getting his team up for this one.
Zuege said St. Pat’s is a very disciplined team that makes very few mistakes. He said the Longhorns will throw some  new wrinkles at them Friday to upset their programmed pattern of play.
Turning a corner
He said they want to build on the momentum from last Friday’s Bridgeport win.
The Longhorns dictated the pace of the game from the outset and played outstanding zone defense.
Zuege said they changed from a man defense to the 1-3-1 zone, after playing it well in two prior games.
They disrupted Bridgeport’s outside shooters with the zone, limiting them to just five 3-pointers.
Zuege said his players have a lot of confidence in the zone. Plus, it helps keep them out of foul trouble. He believes this could well represent a turning point in the season.
“I think we’ve turned a corner,” he said this week.
Controlling the pace
The Longhorns took control of the game from the outset, with a smothering defense that caught Bridgeport off guard.
The Longhorns built a 12-1 lead in the first six minutes with treys from Travis Luhrs and Ryan Moline and fast break baskets from Kelton Fisher and Jeff Dickey.
They kept that 11-point spread at the end of one period, 17-6.
Back-to-back treys from Luhrs gave the Longhorns a 15-point lead midway in the second, 24-9.
Bridgeport made a late run to close the gap to 10 at half, 30-20.
The Longhorns maintained a double-digit lead for the first six minutes of the third before Bridgeport caught some fire offensively.
They dropped a trey at the 2:00 mark and added two more baskets, one with :01 left in the quarter, to narrow the Longhorns’ lead to five, 41-36.
Early in the fourth, the Longhorns rushed their offense, taking quick shots and turning the ball over.
The Longhorns still led by eight but saw their lead cut to five, 46-41 with 4:07 left.
Zuege switched back to a man defense but the Bulldogs still managed to pull within three, 48-45 on a pair of free throws with 3:07 left.
Moline answered with a runner down the lane that proved to be a big basket for the Longhorns to go back up by five, 50-45.
With less than two minutes left, the Longhorns began taking time off the clock. Despite going 3-7 at the line in the final 1:30, the Longhorns gave up just two baskets for the 55-47 win.
Dickey led the scoring with 18, followed by Luhrs with 11 and Fisher with 9.
The defense held Bridgeport’s top scorer, Quentin Baxter, to just 10 points.
For a team that loves the trey ball, the defense held Bridgeport to just 5-20 from outside the arc. Inside they arc, they shot 48 percent, 13-27.
The Longhorns went 5-12 from 3-point range for 48 percent. Inside, they went 14-38 for 37 percent.
Bridgeport shot just nine free throws, making six, while the Longhorns went to the line 21 times, making 12.

This week’s game
The Longhorns will play host to St. Pat’s here on Friday with jayvee girls and boys action beginning at 4 p.m. With this being the last home game, Friday will also be set aside for Senior Night events.
On Tuesday, the Longhorns travel to Wauneta-Palisade. Games start at 3 p.m. and will be played in one gym.
Efforts are being made to start the afternoon off with a girls’ C game. If that happens, the girls’ JV game will be next, followed by the varsity girls and boys. There will be no JV boys’ game in Wauneta due to low Bronco numbers.
Next Friday, the Longhorns travel to Holyoke, Colo.
