Chase County wrestlers rose to the occasion Saturday as they captured eight medals and tie for fifth place team finish at their home meet.
Overall, Head Coach Matt Vlasin said he was pleased with his team’s finish in the 16 team tournament.
“I was a little disappointed in the final round results, but we competed well against some very quality wrestlers,” said Coach Vlasin.
The Longhorns had three wrestlers vying for a first place medal. Although none could capture a win in the final match, all three put together solid matches.
In the 145 pound weight class, Bryson Fisher had a rematch in the finals with Michael Muggli (27-3) of Sidney. Muggli won the first meeting in Ogalllala last week by pinfall in the first period.
Fisher wrestled a much different match the second time around. Although unable to get a win, Fisher took the match into the third period before succombing to a tech-fall loss 1-17.
In his debut on the varsity team this year, Jake Lueth found himself in the championship round facing Micah Scherbarth (22-3) of Gordon-Rushville.
In a very even battle, Lueth found himself with a two point deficit late in the third period. In two escape attempts, Lueth was ruled out of bounds just as he broke loose which seemed to take the wind out of his sails.
Scherbarth was able to ride Lueth out the final 15 seconds to secure the victory and leave Lueth with second place.
In the final championship match, Aaron Hinojosa came up against undefeated Tristan Tuma (12-0) of Gordon-Rushville. Tuma wasted no time keeping his perfect record in tact, pinning Hinojosa in 1:14.
Manuel Hinojosa brought home a third place medal and Colton Burpo, Hunter Dillan, Jorge Cervantes and Zach Space all finished with fifth place medals.
Brody Cleveland (17-0) of Ogallala won the outstanding wrestler award. Cleveland was tested in the final match of the 220 pound division, squeeking out a 7-6 decision over Levi Davis (13-2) of Sedgwick Co., Colo.
