Pheasants Forever hosting Prescribed Burn Training PDF Print E-mail

Pheasants Forever, Nebraska NRCS and Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will be hosting informational Prescribed Burn Training workshops in western Nebraska this month.
These workshops will help to educate landowners and resource professionals with limited knowledge and experience about the benefits of fire and just as important, how to safely conduct a burn. Workshops will be held in Hay Springs, Scottsbluff and North Platte.
Prescribed fire is worth learning about for those who have land enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program. When properly designed, fire can boost the quality of CRP cover both for forage and wildlife.
Whether the contract has a management activity scheduled for 2015 or has been recently renewed and an upgrade to the current cover is required, fire can be a very useful tool in the overall management plan.
Pheasants Forever works closely with NGPC, the Natural Resources Conservation Service, the Nebraska Environmental Trust and other conservation partners to help Nebraskans plan prescribed fires. Since 2008, they have hosted 79 workshops with a total of 1,765 attendees.
“We stress safety, effectiveness and planning,” said Todd Filipi, Pheasants Forever biologist.
“It’s definitely a crash course, but it’s packed full of good advice. We work to get speakers there who have spent some time on fire, and we give people the contacts they need to follow through if they decide that fire is a good option for their land,” he said.
Workshops will be held on the following schedule:
Tuesday, Jan. 20, at the United Methodist Church, 340 Miller Street in Hay Springs, at 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. MT.
Wednesday, Jan. 21, at the North Platte Natural Resources District, 100547 Airport Road in Scottsbluff, at 9 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. MT.
Tuesday, January 27, at North Platte Community College 1101 Halligan Drive, North Platte, at 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. CT
A registration fee of $10 with lunch and training materials provided. To pre-register visit: or contact Heather Francis at 308-882-4263 ext. 3.
