The Imperial campus of Mid-Plains Community College will be moving up Broadway next week, from its present home at 1320 Broadway to 1324 Broadway. The former Hometown Pharmacy is being remodeled into the new campus.
Area Dean of Outreach and Training Bruce Dowse said he and Imperial Campus Coordinator Brenda Ledall planned to begin moving equipment today (Thursday). He added that he hopes to have an open house and a board meeting at the new facility the end of June.
Remodeling began the first of April on the building. Dowse said that included a redesigned interior, as the prior building featured an open design.
Mid-Plains put in a second bathroom, turned an office into a storage/prep space, built an office for Ledall, put in a traditional classroom and another classroom that can be divided in two, and put in a lot of wiring for technology such as televisions and smart boards.
MPCC North Platte Community College students did some of the work, such as electrical and insulation, and rearranging heating and air conditioning vents.
Making the move, Dowse said, allows more room for classrooms and more distance learning capabilities.
“We’ll have more things under one roof, and a more modern building that appears like an education building from the outside,” he added.
Dowse observed that MPCC has “really enjoyed” being in its present location. “The building we’re in now was a very important part of our getting started (in Imperial).”
The Imperial campus initially opened in the former Golden West Motel in two rooms. Students met with Ledall there, and courses and on-line classes were held there.
