A 25-year-old man was killed Sunday night when the 2000 Ford Expedition he was driving rolled on Old Highway 6, less than a mile north of Wauneta.
A male passenger in the vehicle received only minor injuries and walked to Wauneta seeking help.
Both men were identified as Mexican nationals by Chase County Sheriff’s Deputy Dan Steinert, who said they were living in Wauneta while they did farm work in the area.
Officials are not releasing the name of the deceased pending notification of his family in Mexico. The name and age of the passenger were not available.
Alcohol and a high rate of speed were noted as contributing factors in the accident, said Steinert. Seat belts were not in use at the time of the wreck.
The driver was thrown from the vehicle as it rolled just north of the “Y,” ejecting the man. He hit the pavement with his head, killing him instantly, said Steinert.
Members of the Wauneta EMS and Wauneta Volunteer Fire Department were called to assist following the accident, which occurred sometime around 8 p.m. Sunday.
