The Imperial Republican

Life is really changing for Vicar Jacob Hercamp and his wife, Emily. They were married early this summer, moved across the country to Imperial, and he was installed as Vicar at Zion Lutheran Church in Imperial Aug. 3.
Vicar Hercamp is a native of Columbus, Ind. After graduating from Indiana University in Bloomington in December 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry, he followed the call to ministry.
The 25-year old entered Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Ind. the summer of 2012, spent a year in the classroom, then accepted a summer vicarage, followed by a year at Cambridge University in England for his second year of seminary.
Now he’s in Imperial, where he hopes to “get an array of different experiences so I’m as well prepared as possible for the ministry.”
Vicar Hercamp will work with Bible studies, youth groups and classes, give services at the Imperial Manor and preach at the church, and go on visitations.
The Vicar grew up in a Lutheran family, attended Lutheran schools, and people had always told him he knew “his Lutheran stuff.” Therefore, he should be a teacher or pastor.
He went his own way, though, but found out through an internship in a chemistry lab “that I was not the lab person I thought I would be.”
During his undergraduate years, he found five Lutheran dorm mates, with whom he established a Lutheran fraternity.
Through that and the contacts he’d made, “I knew more and more where I should be going.”
Vicar Hercamp will conclude his studies following his appointment in Imperial with another year that will include more classes and a review of his vicarage with advisors and the supervisor of the program.
The Vicar and Emily met through a classmate in the spring of 2013, and were married June 20. She is originally from Kalamazoo, Mich.
Emily obtained an Associates Degree in computer drafting in 2007 and worked for an engineering firm, drafting for commercial and industrial buildings.
She hopes to find part time work in Imperial, and looks forward to setting up their house, spending time with her husband, and exploring the area.
Vicar Hercamp is looking forward to the hunting season, as he enjoys hunting in his free time.
