Time to get back to regular diet PDF Print E-mail

By Jan Schultz, The Imperial Republican News Editor

If you’re like me, one of the best parts of the Chase County Fair is the food! While I try to eat healthy most of the time, I always take a break from that during fair. A few days of great food that’s maybe not the healthiest can’t hurt too much, can it? Do I really have to eat healthy all the time?
One of my favorite stops at the fair is the shaved ice booth. I noticed there was a new sno-shack at the fair this year.
I learned the longtime couple who have operated the booth for years couldn’t be here this year. A replacement was found, and with the 90-degree temperatures this year, it looked like they were just as busy.
That’s been a popular fair food option for years and years around our house. Our son Darrin, when he was in football practice two-a-days during fair week back in high school, often ventured over to the sno-shack that week with his teammates for a tasty, cold refresher.
My other favorite fair food is the funnel cake. Dump the cherry topping and powdered sugar on and I’m in food heaven. It wouldn’t be the Chase County Fair without seeing people walk by with full plates of funnel cakes.
The fair is also my one time (unless I visit the circus!) that I’ll eat cotton candy. It is so bad for me being made completely of sugar, but I’m not apologizing. It’s fair!
We also enjoy the local food stands that are operated by our resident chefs and organizations. Thank-you to them all for helping out when there’s little time to make meals at home. I had several family members here this year and we took full advantage of them!
But now, it’s that sad time to get back to a normal diet. I had a salad for lunch Wednesday. It was good, but I’d be lying if I said I enjoyed it as much as the funnel cake at the fair.
By the way, my family was here from Omaha and Rapid City, So. Dak. They all commented on what a clean community Imperial is. Way to go Imperial for always giving that impression, not just at fair, either. Our efforts to make our community look good through volunteer efforts, as well as our nuisance codes, are making a difference.
