Five kids catch calves they’ll show next year

Five kids earned the right to show their own calf at next year’s fair beef show by catching a calf in the fair’s first-ever catch-a-calf contest.
The contest was organized by 14 year-old Emma Fergurson of Imperial and held during the arena events Tuesday night, Aug. 12.
The five lucky winners who manhandled their calves into the pen included Logan Mendenhall, Cade Francis, Whitney Hopp, Trevor Peterson and Jose Medrano.
While there was no entry fee for the eight participants, each had to have a place to raise the calf and agree to pay for feed and vet bills in the event they won. They also had to agree to buy a mortality insurance policy that runs about $175.
Ferguson organized the local contest to give other youths the opportunity to share in the experience she gained as a catch-a-calf winner at the National Western Stock Show in 2013.
She raised the calf and showed it in this year’s National Western show and won grand champion honors.
The calves caught during last week’s event won’t be the actual calves the kids raise. The calves in the arena were from her own herd.
Sponsors will purchase calves for the winners to raise.
Sponsors to date include Imperial Beef, Jerry Kuenning & Son, Harchelroad Motors and Wine Glass Ranch.
