Chase County Schools’ one-act play was to be performed yesterday (Wednesday) at Bayard, in district competition. “The Beggar’s Opera” is a soap opera-type play, revolving around beggars, thieves and actors in 1728 London.
The play placed third in SPVA competition in North Platte Nov. 24, and also received a superior rating. A public viewing was held Nov. 25 in Imperial.
Winning SPVA acting awards were Bonnie Cochran, Molly Strand and Morgan Strand, and honorable mention awards were given to Nichole Dickey and Chevy Smith.  An all-conference cast medal was given to Jacob Boggs as best actor.
The play consists of London beggars who decide to stage a play in the grand style of contemporary operas. Their costumes and props are whatever they have been able to beg, find or steal.
Director Cathy Howard said the play “offers lots of opportunities  for actors to create unique and colorful characterizations, and to learn techniques for acting in ensemble as well as character makeup.”
