Jordyn Doetker of Wauneta completed her high school rodeo career last week with a 34th place finish in girls’ cutting at the National High School Rodeo Association Finals in Rock Springs, Wyo.
One of 106 riders in girls’ cutting, Doetker started off with a tie for ninth place in the opening run of competition Sunday, July 13, and finished placing sixth on her second and last run, Saturday, July 19. The rodeo ended July 20. Each rider was given two runs spread over the six days of competition.
The event was won by Sadee Smith of Star, Idaho.
Doetker said she had hoped to do a little better, but a few mistakes and the tough competition caught up with her. She said the cattle and the helpers “were way better” than at the high school rodeos she had attended in Nebraska and she added the judges were more professional.
Away from the arena, Doetker enjoyed the trade show and a trip to Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area near McKinnon, Wyo.
Overall, “It was really cool seeing all the sponsors and how big the event was,” Doetker said. “It was cool to be a part of that.”
While her horse, seven-year old Tilly, will move on to a new high school rodeo competitor, Doetker will leave for North Central Texas College in less than a month. There she will compete on the school’s Ranch Horse Team.
