It was cool and misty during the Southwest Nebraska Izaak Walton League’s Ron Berry Memorial Kids Fishing Day Saturday. That didn’t hurt the fishing, but those participating were bundled up.
About 16 children signed up to learn the basics of fishing, including etiquette, casting, the proper use of lures and more.
One fisherman, Jena Spady of Lewellen, was proud of her 14 and three-quarter inch largemouth bass, caught with her first cast. However, Spady, the granddaughter of Pete and Becky Spady of Champion, had to release the fish because it was a quarter inch too small to keep.
The group was sampling the fishing at Champion Lake. No fishing license or park permit was required during the event.
Berry was an IKEs member and an enthusiastic fisherman. The event has been held about 10 years.
