Despite a cold and windy day, Chase County’s boys’ track team turned in 10 personal bests and a lot of good performances en route to the team championship at Sutherland.
Last Thursday’s meet had a chilly start, but conditions improved a little later in the day. It was still windy, however, said Coach Carl Zuege.
He felt the weather did impact some times and marks, but those improved as the day progressed.
Chase County finished 22.5 points ahead of North Platte St. Pat’s, an SPVA Conference school they’ll see again next week at the SPVA meet.
“It’s going to be a battle at conference,” Zuege predicts.
St. Pat’s scores a lot of points in the sprints and some jumps, but the Longhorns counter with strong performances in the middle and long distances. Both teams have a dominant thrower, and they are about even on the relays.
The SPVA meet will be held in Grant on Friday, May 2, hosted by Perkins County. That meet has a 12:30 p.m. start time.
Last week, Chase County had several athletes score a lot of points for their team.
Justus Wallin continues to contribute a lot of points, said Zuege. Last week, he won the shot put and placed second in the discus. His winning shot put throw of 50’ 9 1/2” was a personal best.
Kevin German ran both hurdles last week, as he continues to recover from a muscle strain in his leg. He won the 300 meters, and was edged by a tenth of a second in the highs for the runner-up medal.
Zuege said, “He looked good last week and as he gets stronger, we expect more points from him.”
Holden Dreiling ran a personal best to win the 3200 at 10:54.9, and also earned a second in the 1600.
Travis Luhrs collected the Longhorns’ other individual first in the high jump with a 6’0” effort.
Rounding out the firsts was the 1600 meter relay team of Dan Sullivan, David Almanza, Shay Eidson and Trey Milner, who paced over three and a half seconds ahead of second-place Brady.
Zuege said that the CCS returning state-qualifying team has won the event in three of the four meets so far this season, and he expects them to continue to drop their time.
Last week’s first place time was 3:41.10, a bit slower than the week before, but there was wind in the afternoon.
Chase County gained the most points, 15 in all, in the 400 meter dash when Almanza placed second, Milner, third, and Sullivan, sixth.
Team scoring at Sutherland was Chase County 115, St. Pat’s 92.5, Paxton 87, Perkins County 63, Brady 58, Wallace 46, Hershey 20.75, Wauneta-Palisade 20, Hyannis 10, Sutherland 8 and Arthur County 6.75.
