Second championship for lady Longhorns PDF Print E-mail

A “super effort” across the board was given by the Lady Longhorn track team, their head coach said, as they won their second meet of the season Saturday.
Well ahead of second place Ogallala, the Chase County girls did it without a full team due to morning ACT testing and others at another school event.
Coach Al Zuege said, on paper, Ogallala was supposed to win the meet by 20 points.
“But, we came through and performed way better than expected,” he said.
“It exceeded our expectations.”
In the end, the Lady Longhorns won by a 25-point margin. Zuege said they probably would have scored 30 more points if the full team had been there.
The meet championship was due to many individual efforts, according to the coach.
Standouts were the gold medals performances from Destiny Reinke in the 800 (personal best), Taylin McNair in the 400, Kristen Jussel in both hurdles and another pair of firsts from the 1600 meter and powederpuff relay teams.
Jodi Koellner brought home a gold and silver in the shot and discus, and the team picked up a lot of points with three place-winners in the 800. Besides Reinke’s first, Paige Spady was fourth and Kadyn Milner, fifth, in that event.
One of the biggest surprises of the meet, Zuege said, was Chase County’s second and third in the triple jump on the efforts of Cheyanne Kuhlmann and Sarah Allen, the latter hitting a personal best at 30’3”.
Katelyn Wheeler’s personal best of 4’11” in the high jump was also good enough for second place.
Zuege said the athletes “competed so well,” at Perkins County, noting that reflected their personalities.
“Each team has its own personality,” Zuege noted,  and said this year’s Lady Longhorn squad has a “we don’t like to lose” personality.
“And, yes, I’m happy to have that,” he smiled.
This week, the team travels to Sutherland today (Thursday) for that meet, which was cancelled last year due to weather.
On Tuesday, April 22, the team will be at home for the Chase County Invitational.
See the boxed schedules on the sports pages for more info.
