Eleven golfers make up this year’s CCS golf team that will open the season Tuesday with a varsity and jayvee meet.
Coach Larry Munger said the Longhorn varsity squad will compete in the Bayard invite while the jayvees will play in the Dundy County-Stratton meet.
The Longhorns look to repeat a trip to the  state tournament again this year. He said the experience of making the tournament last year will be beneficial to the team this year.
Varsity players include seniors Curtis Laird and Sam Haarberg and juniors Tyler Jennings, Ryan Moline and Darin Knobbe.
Junior Freddie Kasselman was a member of last year’s state tournament team but is ineligible for tournament play this year due to transfer rules. He returned to CCS at semester after attending the first semester in Kansas.
Others who will compete for varsity playing time include junior Allan Smith, freshman Cade Francis and sophomore Rabecca Huicochea. They are joined by sophomore Lorena Mares and freshman Trey Bahler.
Munger said his varsity players have already been scoring better this year, compared to the same time last year.
This year’s returning depth put the Longhorns among the top teams in the SPVA conference, Munger said.
He said Kimball joins the lineup this season and usually fields a good team. St. Pat’s always seems to field a strong team as well.
Both the SPVA and district meets will be played at Kimball this year. He said they don’t play the course on a regular basis but will be a good course for the two tournaments.
