Saturday’s cold temperatures kept three St. Francis, Kan., teams away, but 23 other fourth, fifth and sixth grade basketball teams made the trip to Imperial.
They came for the annual youth basketball tournament, which occupied the Longhorn, Shorthorn and Wellington School gyms all morning and much of the afternoon.
Coordinator Alex McNair said things went well. The tournament couldn’t be a success without the help of many volunteers, he noted.
Girls’ teams competed in pool play, while the boys played from eight-team brackets.
Imperial had a total of six teams scheduled for the tourney, but after those few teams didn’t come, Imperial’s fifth and sixth grade teams were split to fill in the gaps, he said.
Volunteers helped out as referees, on the time clock, as scorebook keepers and concession workers.
Besides Imperial, teams from Benkelman, Perkins County, Ogallala, Holyoke, Colo. and Wray, Colo. were here for the tournament.
