The Chase County wrestlers fell just short of sending anyone to the state wrestling meet this weekend.
Senior Austin White felt the true meaning of the heartbreak round when his high school wrestling career ended one match short of a state berth.
After winning his first match of the tournament, White lost to eventual second place finisher Casey Glassgow of Gordon-Rushville to send him to the consolation bracket.
White beat wrestlers from Ord and Hershey to make it to the consolation semi-finals (heartbreak round), where his run was upended by Joseph Feldner of Kearney Catholic. White took the short end of a 2-11 decision to end his hopes of a state berth.
The only other wrestler recording a victory at the district meet for Chase County was sophomore Hunter Dillan.
Dillan started the tournament by pinning Justin Hilliker of Gordon Rushville in just 1:18 of the first period. In his second match, Dillan faced undefeated and eventual district champion Evan Gideon of Sargent/Burwell. Gideon won by pinfall with just one second left in the first period.
In the consolation bracket, Dillan was matching Carter Fleshman point for point, but with 30 seconds to go in the second period, Fleshman used Dillan’s momentum to roll him into a pin.
Adam Burpo, Manuel Hinojosa and Khris Kuhlmann all went 0-2 in the tournament.
