Playing three games over five days made it a full final week of the regular season for the Lady Longhorn basketball team.
While it was a busy week, Chase County collected its fifth win of the season Friday when they defeated Bayard on the road. They lost to Wauneta/Palisade and Hershey in last week’s other games.
The team entered the C1-11 subdistrict tournament this week, but lost their first round game Monday to Cozad, ending their season at 5-15.
Hershey game
In their last home appearance of the season in Imperial, Chase County gave state-ranked Hershey a bit of a battle Saturday night.
Chase County was within six points of tying Hershey in the final minute of the game, but was forced to foul and Hershey made their free throws.
The Lady Longhorns eventually fell, 29-38.
But it was one of the closest games played against Hershey all season, as only six other Lady Panther wins were by 10 points or less. Hershey’s three losses this season have also been by 10 points or less as they sport a 21-3 record.
Coach Nancy Sorensen said her team played good defense Saturday night. They held top scorer Maegan Hiatt to just eight points in the contest.
Unfortunately others picked up the offense for Hershey.
Chase County got off to a slow start, scoring just one point the first quarter, but after the half, put up 13 in the third while Hershey scored 11.
But the difference came once again at the free throw line, as Chase County actually outshot Hershey from two-point range. But Hershey dropped in one more trey, outshooting Chase County 3-2 beyond the arc.
Hershey had almost three times the number of free throws as Chase County and hit 11 of 23. Chase County was just 3-8 at the line.
Paige Spady led the scoring for Chase County with eight, while Taylin McNair added five.
Jodi Koellner has seven rebounds, Spady three assists and Kaycee Bubak three steals.
Hershey’s Brooke Munsen, a starter for the Lady Panthers, suffered a reported ACL tear early in Saturday’s game and had to leave the contest.

Bayard game
Chase County picked up their fifth and final win of the season Friday at Bayard, 31-22.
Despite the low score, nine Lady Longhorns were on the board led by Destiny Reinke, McNair and Spady, each with six points.
Coach Sorensen said her team did not play with the same intensity they had on Saturday, but they got the win.
Again, free throws were a problem as Chase County hit just eight of 20.
From two-point range, Chase County hit 10 of 39 (26 percent), and were 40 percent on free throws.
In individual stats, Makala Bartels grabbed six rebounds, Spady was credited with four assists and McNair, Spady, MaKenna Ketter and Valeria Cervantes each had three steals.

Wauneta/Palisade game
The Lady Longhorns hosted Chase County’s only other high school team Feb. 11 when Wauneta/Palisade came to town and left with a 52-41 win.
The Lady Broncos, holding a 14-8 record early this week and top-seeded in their subdistrict, again had twice as many tries at the free throw line, scoring 10 more points there than Chase County.
Both teams were in double figures each of the first three quarters, but both squads also had trouble finding the basket in the fourth as neither hit a field goal until just 1:30 remained in the contest.
Reinke sparked up the end of the game with a three-pointer, matching one put up first quarter by McNair.
Koellner and McNair led Chase County’s scoring with nine each.
As a team they hit 14-47 from two-point range (30 percent).
In other stats, Bartels led the rebounding with seven, Koellner had three steals, while Reinke contributed with three steals and three assists.
