The Lady Longhorns shut down one of the tallest individuals they’ve faced this season, but too many other North Platte St. Pat’s players picked up the slack.
Chase County Coach Nancy Sorensen knew it would be a tough contest on the road for her team and it was. St. Pat’s collected its 17th victory of the season with a 51-20 win over Chase County.
“They won the game,” she said of the Lady Irish.
After having the Feb. 4 home Chase County game with Wray, Colo., cancelled due to snow, it had been a full 10 days for a contest for the varsity team.
It was difficult for Chase County to connect on offense. They hit nine of 39 from two-point range for 23 percent, and were 0-6 on three-pointers.
Leading the offense were Makala Bartels and Taylin McNair, each with six.
North Platte’s lanky Brittany Lawrence was held to just five points in the game, but several other of her teammates stepped up, Sorensen said, and three scored in double figures.
Fouls also proved to be a problem for Chase County Friday, as they racked up 21, sending the Lady Irish to the line 26 times where they shot 50 percent.
On the other end, Chase County only shot five free throws in the game and connected on just two.
“They attacked the hoop hard,” Sorensen said of the Lady Irish.
Chase County’s aggressiveness resulted in fouls too many times.
In other Chase County stats, leading rebounders were Bartels and Valeria Cervantes with seven and six, respectively. Paige Spady had three assists and two steals.
The loss dropped Chase County to 4-12 on the season.

Subdistricts start Monday
The formal bracket for the C1-11 subdistrict tournament won’t be out until today (Thursday), but seeding is pretty much sewn up.
Chase County will likely be the No. 4 seed in the five-team tournament, and will face Cozad in the Monday 6 p.m. MT game in Sutherland.
The winner will advance to face top-seeded Hershey Tuesday night at 5 p.m. MT, when No. 2 Ogallala and No. 3 Gothenburg will also face off at 6:30 p.m. MT. Winners of Tuesday’s games advance to the subdistrict final next Thursday, Feb. 20, at 6:30 p.m. MT.
The C1-11 champion will advance to districts to face the C1-12 winner for a trip to the state tournament.
But, before Monday’s start of the post season tournament, Chase County has two other games this weekend after hosting Wauneta-Palisade Tuesday night.
On Friday, Chase County travels to Bayard to meet the Lady Tigers, who were 4-13 on Monday. Action starts at 4 p.m. with the JV contests.
On Saturday, the Lady Longhorns will host Hershey for their final regular season game with JV action starting at 3:30 p.m.
Hershey was 20-2 this week, but will face North Platte St. Pat’s tonight (Thursday) for a rematch of the SPVA tournament finalists. In the Jan. 25 finals, Hershey won a close 33-31 game for the championship.
As Saturday also marks the last home game of the season, it will also be Senior Parents’ Night. Senior members of the girls’ and boys’ basketball teams and their parents will be honored before the start of the boys’ varsity game.
