It’s never fun to lose, but it  might hurt a little less that the Lady Longhorns were eliminated from last week’s SPVA Tournament by the eventual champions.

Chase County lost their first round game, 25-59, to Hershey, who upended North Platte St. Pat’s in the SPVA finals Saturday night, 33-31.

Hershey, now 17-1 on the season, came in as the No. 2 seed in the girls’ tournament, behind top-seeded St. Pat’s, which has a 13-3 record.

Coach Nancy Sorensen commended her team for staying with the Lady Panthers the first quarter on the Jan. 20 game, which ended in a 9-9 tie.

But then, Hershey let loose with the three, and ended up with a total of nine in the game, compared to Chase County’s two, both from Taylin McNair.

Chase County was held to single-digit scoring, as Hershey sported double figures the last three stanzas, including a 21-point third.

Sorensen said her team just couldn’t make the points against a strong Hershey defense.

Topping the scoring for Chase County were McNair and Paige Spady, both with 10. McNair had a pair of treys in her night of shooting.

As a team from two-point range, Chase County hit eight of 28 for 29 percent.

Chase County had a 75 percent mark on free throws, but reached the line just four times, making three. Hershey wasn’t at the line much either, hitting four of seven.

Individually, Spady finished with seven rebounds and three steals. MaKenna Ketter pulled down six rebounds, while Destiny Reinke stole the ball four times.

Two reinjured players, seniors Kaycee Bubak and Bridget Langin, were back with the team practicing this week and since last week’s game, Coach Sorensen said. She’s hopeful both will be back in action this week.
