McCook hosts 9-10 open wrestling tournament

Four junior varsity wrestlers traveled to McCook Dec. 19 for a freshman-sophomore open wrestling tournament.
Depending on how many wrestlers were in each weight division, the format switched from round robin to eight man double elimination brackets.
The Longhorns brought home a first, second and fourth place finish.
In the 113 pound division, Adam Burpo went undefeated to finish in first place. After defeating Jacinto Guadalupe of Lexington in just 14 seconds, Burpo pinned Quinton Fair of Gothenburg in 24 seconds.
In Burpo’s final match of the day, Brandton Flanders of North Platte went the distance, losing to Burpo 13-6.
In the 120 pound class, Colton Burpo was in a five man round robin. After being pinned by Diego Diaz of North Platte and Alex DeSantiago of Lexington in 3:52 and 1:44 respectively, Burpo won a decision over Brody Denny of North Platte 11-10.
In his last match of the day, Burpo fell to Caleb Johnston of Holdrege in 52 seconds.
Hunter Dillan finished with second place in a five man round robin at 132 pounds.
After losing to eventual champion Alex Murphy of North Platte by pinfall in 5:04, Dillan bounced back to win three straight matches.
Dillan defeated Kylen Rhodes of North Platte 12-10, Hayden Hubbard of Gothenburg by pinfall in 4:38 and Quinton Lehn of North Platte 9-4 to finish second.
Manuel Hinojosa wrestled in an eight man bracket at 138 pounds. Hinojosa lost to Dezmon Riley of North Platte by pin in his first match of the day.
In the consolation semi-finals, Hinojosa pinned Jose Ortega of Lexington in 3:39. After trailing in the second period of the consolation finals 3-6, Hinojosa made a third period charge but came up just short, losing 9-11, for fourth place.
