Chase County took just three varsity wrestlers to the wrestling tournament in Sidney on Saturday. Although 13 teams were entered in the tournament, very few of the 16 man brackets were filled over half full.
Khris Kuhlmann finished in second place after only three wrestlers showed up in the 160 pound weight class. Tournament organizers switched this class to a three man round robin.
Kuhlmann lost a close match in his first round of the day to Ryan Nieto of Sidney 6-8. Towards the end of the third period and trailing by two points, Kuhlmann nearly secured a reversal that would have tied the match and possibly scored some back points to take the lead.
Nieto was able to clear the hold and keep control to get the two point victory.
Jake Lueth looked strong in the 152 pound class.
After defeating Tarin Jespersen of Hemingford in 3:12, Lueth was beating Dustin Graves of Sterling in the second period. While trying a roll through, Lueth got caught and was pinned at 3:37 to drop to the consolation semi-finals.
Lueth defeated Ephraim Blanco of Mitchell by a score of 10-1 to advance to the consolation finals.
Lueth took care of business, defeating Lukias Higer of Sidney by pinfall with 43 seconds left in the third period, capturing third place.
Bryson Fisher competed in the 138 pound division. After receiving a bye in the first round, Fisher lost a 3-9 decision to Zach Borges of Sidney to drop to the consolation side of the bracket.
Fisher got another bye before defeating Lee Jesperson of Hemingford in just 59 seconds.
Wesley Christensen of Bridgeport pinned Fisher in the next round at the 4:28 mark, dropping Fisher into the fifth and sixth place match.
Fisher pinned Cody Mueller of Mitchell in 2:27 and secured fifth place.
The wrestlers have a nice break from action over the holidays, returning to competition Jan. 11 at the Ogallala duals.
