Three key players for the Lady Longhorn basketball team were on the bench Friday night in the second of a pair of season openers last week.
Seniors Kaycee Bubak and Bridget Langin were out with back injuries for the season’s first game in Cozad last Thursday, when starter MaKenna Ketter suffered a possible concussion in the third quarter.
Ketter joined the two seniors on the bench Friday night. All three remain uncertain for playing as the season moves into its second weekend.
CCS Coach Nancy Sorensen said their return to the court was still “up in the air” on Monday. At least two of the players were seeing doctors this week, she said.
Despite their absence, the Lady Longhorns lost by just a point at their opener in Cozad, 38-37.
Chase County had a strong start against McCook Friday, taking an early 6-0 lead, but dropped the 56-36 contest in their home opener.
Coach Sorensen said free throws played a big part in their opening weekend losses as they shot a combined 40 percent from the line in the two games.
This week, the Lady Longhorns will be on the road to Sidney Friday for games starting with the JVs at 4 p.m.
“Sidney is always good,” Sorensen said.
They have five seniors and seven juniors on their roster, so will bring a lot of experience, height and quickness to Friday’s game, she said.
The Lady Red Raiders are 2-1 this week after opening weekend when they beat Alliance and Scottsbluff, but lost by 10 to Kearney Catholic.
On Saturday, Chase County returns to its home court to face Ogallala, which also had an 0-2 start to their season with losses to Minden and Lexington.
The Lady Indians had five senior starters last year, so will have a new lineup on the court this season.
Games here Saturday start at 4:30 p.m. with the JV contests, followed by varsity games in the Longhorn gym.
Cozad game
It was a heartbreaking loss at Cozad last Thursday.
After making a 14-1 run in the fourth quarter to tie the game 35-35 with just over a minute left, the Lady Longhorns suffered a one-point loss, 38-37.
Freshman Destiny Reinke made a nice layup to tie the game late, then fouled the Cozad ball-handler as she attempted a steal.
Cozad’s Emily Reyes hit both free throws, putting the Lady Haymakers up 37-35.
Chase County turned over the ball after regaining possession, but after a timeout, got the ball back. Valeria Cervantes had a shot at the basket, but missed, then fouled Cozad as they rebounded.
In the double bonus, Cozad’s Sarah Yocum missed the first but hit the second free throw to lead 38-35.
With time running out, Reinke hit another quick layup, putting the team within one, but couldn’t get the ball back as the seconds ticked away, ending the game at 38-37.
Sorensen said she was proud of how the girls fought until the end, but free throw shooting was key.
Chase County hit just seven of 21 from the line for 33 percent.
From the field, they hit 15 of 40 for 38 percent, and were 0-3 on treys.
Scoring leader was Paige Spady with 12. MaKenna Ketter and Jodi Koellner added five each.
In other stats, Makala Bartels had 10 rebounds, Koellner seven and Cervantes, five. Cervantes also had two steals.

McCook game
Koellner, Bartels and Emma Engbrecht knocked down a field goal each in the first two minutes of Friday’s game with McCook, as Chase County took a quick 6-0 lead.
But, then McCook went on a 12-0 run to lead 12-6, and remained in control of the game the rest of the night.
Early in that 12-0 run, McCook hit back-to-back treys to put a spark in their offense. Chase County was unable to connect on a three again that night.
From the field, the Lady Longhorns shot 12 of 35 for 34 percent.
Again, they struggled at the line hitting 12 of 26 for 46 percent.
Bartels and Cervantes led the scoring for Chase County with eight each. Spady added five.
Bartels also led in rebounds with seven and had two steals. Reinke and Spady also stole the ball twice against the Lady Bison.
