Just like their fellow high school students playing basketball and wrestling, the high school bowling team from Chase County Schools also kicks off its 2013-14 season this week.
Now in its sixth year here, the high school bowling program is not affiliated with the NSAA, but coordinated by the Nebraska High School Bowling Federation.
Coach Denise Smith said there are 14 youths on the teams this year, nine boys and five girls. That’s up from 11 on the teams last year.
Returning as a coach with Smith is David Kahle. Alex Marshall is working with the team for the his first season.
The teams practice at Imperial Lanes, and will host a home dual there in January.
Competition in high school federation bowling differs from local league bowling.
Five bowlers compete on a team, and go head-to-head against a bowler from the opposing team for two games. The high bowler in each game gets a point for his/her team, and the team winner (all five scores tallied) gains another three points.
Also, as part of the competition, a “Baker’s Format” is used, in which the five bowlers on each team take turns bowling two frames in each of three games. The team winning two of three games gets an additional five points.
Teams go through this format twice in each of the quads (four teams competing).
When it comes time for districts, teams compete with just four members who bowl the best three out of five “Baker’s Format” games, Smith noted. That’s in addition to the two head-to-head games.
Here are the CCS students on the teams this year, and the 2013-14 schedule.
Boys’ team—Cody Cochran, Tanner Allen, Carson Fanning, Sam Cahow, Allen Smith, Will Lewis, Sheldon Bartholomew, Indy Smith, Cade Francis.
Girls’ team—Tapainga Kahle, Lexi Howard, Faith Reinke, Becca Huicochea, Makayla DaMoude.
Season schedule:
Dec. 7—Quad at Scottsbluff
Dec. 14—No competition due to ACT
Dec. 21—Quad at Ogallala
Jan. 11—Quad at Sidney
Jan. 18—Home dual with Alliance
