In observance of National Young Readers Week, Nov. 11-15, Chase County Schools Elementary Principal Susie Stewart read “from bell to bell” Friday. She read “a lot” of books to all classes in grades K-6 during the day, taking only 20 minutes for lunch.
National Young Readers Week is an annual event that was co-founded in 1989 by Pizza Hut and the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress. Pizza Hut is also the founder of the “Book It” program that encourages elementary students to read.
Stewart said Book It suggested reading “bell to bell,” and she took up the challenge. Many schools have local “celebrities” read aloud a favorite children’s book to classrooms.
Children learn to enjoy reading by example, so when they see an adult whom they admire and look up to who is reading, they may be more likely to read for enjoyment as well.
