Imperial’s Chase County Longhorns made an early exit from the C1 football playoffs last Thursday. They dropped their first round game to the Gothenburg Swedes 31-15 to end the season at 3-6.
Even though the Longhorns suffered a loss, Coach Dan Lenners said his kids played hard throughout the whole contest.
Following the game, Gothenburg’s coach, Craig Haake, told Lenners the Longhorns ranked among the two hard-hitting teams this season.         Lenners said that means something, especially when it comes from an opposing coach. That’s something the kids can take pride in, he noted.
The Longhorns made their presence on the field known on Gothenburg’s first two possessions.
On the opening possession of the game, they held Gothenburg to a field goal after driving all the way to the Longhorn 14.
After recovering a fumble on the Longhorn 33, Gothenburg turned it over on downs, giving the ball back to the Longhorns.
In the third quarter, the defense stopped Gothenburg from converting a Longhorn turnover inside the 15 with an interception in the end zone by Kelton Fisher.
On Gothenburg’s next possession, they forced them to turn it over on downs again at the Longhorn 36.
Offense unproductive
The Longhorns experienced trouble moving the ball most of the night, be it on the ground or in the air.
In the first three quarters, the Longhorns crossed midfield just once.
Right before half, the Longhorns’ inability to move the ball opened up another scoring opportunity for the Swedes.
Trailing 17-0, with two minutes left in the half, the Longhorns started at their own 20 following the Swede’s second touchdown.
Despite battling a brisk wind in their face, the Longhorns tried to go to the air to move the ball down field.
However, three incomplete passes enabled Gothenburg to get the ball back at the Longhorn 42 with 1:42 left in the half.
They needed just five plays to score with less than 20 seconds left in the half.
That score really hurt, Lenners said. Instead of going in at halftime trailing by 17, they went in trailing by 24.
The two teams traded possessions in the third quarter, with neither scoring.
Gothenburg got their last touchdown early in the fourth quarter to take a 31-0 lead.
With four minutes left in the game, the Swedes were forced to punt for the first time of the night.
Junior quarterback Travis Luhrs took over the helm and put together a seven-play, 56-yard drive. Jake Lueth capped off the drive with by a six-yard touchdown run.
The Longhorns then recovered an on-side kick to set up their final score of the night. That came on a 19-yard pass from Luhrs to Kevin German.
The Longhorns ran a successful fake on the extra point kick to make the score 31-15.
Another on-side kick was recovered by Gothenburg, who ran out the clock.
