A river of corn flooding into town PDF Print E-mail

Large piles of corn are already building up at both of the grain facilities in Imperial. Corn harvest moved into high gear last week, with some estimates that this year’s harvest is already 40-50 percent complete. With a hard killing frost last week, corn is drying down. Local elevators said they are seeing moisture levels anywhere from 13 to 19 percent. Spotty yields have been reported, ranging from 170 to 220 bushels per acre. Fields that caught some rain showers and weren’t stressed for water appear to be yielding better than fields that missed the rain or couldn’t get enough water applied. Last week’s wind storm has created some urgency to get the corn out of the field, as well. (Republican photo)
