A mountain of corn PDF Print E-mail

Imperial Beef has piled high moisture corn for a number of years but this year’s pile will be the biggest ever. Manager Brad Foote said they plan to take in five million bushels this fall. This will be one million bushels more than they’ve taken in previous years. Foote said they began taking high moisture corn Sept. 9. He figures they will be taking corn for another seven to 10 days to reach their five million bushel goal. The 25 percent increase in corn needs relates to the growth of the feed yard, which now has a capacity of 50,000 head after an expansion project. At the peak of the harvest, the yard unloaded 290 trucks in one day. Tractors with speed movers pull the corn to the top of the pile. Another large four-wheel tractor equipped with duals is also run over the pile to pack it. As the corn is unloaded, a loader dumps the corn into a grinder that cracks it before being put in the pile.
