Pickup totalled in holiday weekend fire

Firefighters from Imperial had a call to Enders Lake Recreational Area late Friday afternoon about 5:30 p.m. at the start of the Labor Day weekend.
A page received by members of the Imperial Volunteer Fire Department (IVFD) reported a pickup was on fire near the lake, across from the Enders golf course.
Fire Chief Nick Schultz said when the first IVFD truck arrived, the pickup was fully involved, but the fire was contained to the pickup that had stopped on the gravel road leading from the lake area. There was no threat of spreading into the dry grass.
The IVFD attacked the fire with foam and water from two trucks.
The vehicle’s owner is Terry Tiffany of Littleton, Colo.
His wife told Schultz they had a camper at the lake for the weekend, and as they were leaving the area to drive into Imperial for supper, their grandson noticed flames between the back of the cab and front of the pickup’s box. The three people immediately exited, she said.
Schultz said a capsized portable gas tank that may have leaked onto hot exhaust could have been a contributing factor. Exact cause is still uncertain.
Schultz and Chad Oxford, whose Triple O Service business towed the truck back to Imperial that evening, both believed the 2004 one-ton Chevy Silverado diesel pickup was a total loss.
