It was another mud-filled volleyball tourney on the Fourth of July, as the Imperial FFA hosted its annual event at the IVFD’s Helen Fanning Memorial Family Fun Day.
Twelve four-person teams (two males, two females) signed up for the single elimination tourney this year held on the northeast corner of the Wellington St. football field, said FFA Advisor Jason Speck.
In the bracketed tournament, teams competed to win the best out of three games to 15 points. They advanced through the bracket until the final four met in the consolations and finals.
At the end of the single elimination tournament, the team of Raul Valenzuela, Alex Valenzuela, Rosalia Torres and Rafael Torres emerged the winners, and took home the top prize of $50 in Chamber Bucks.
Second place and $30 in Chamber Bucks went to the team of Humberto Guillen, Berenice Marquez, Bahola Valenzuela and Misael Garcia.
The third place team, which won $20 in Chamber Bucks, was comprised of Adam Dickey, Brian Bell, Valeria Cervantes and Kelsey Schmidt.
The IVFD provides the prizes for the mud volleyball, Speck noted.
Temperatures weren’t quite as extreme as the 2012 Fourth of July tournament, when the mercury eclipsed the century mark.
Last Thursday, the highs were in the low 90s, still warm enough that players didn’t mind the spills into the muddy water.
Members of the FFA chapter kept score, served as referees and kept the bracket updated.
