Mason Holmes, a 2013 Chase County Schools graduate, was part of a four-person Parliamentary Procedure team that took second place at the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) conference in Anaheim, Calif., last week.
Holmes and three other students from Nebraska qualified for the team by being the top four test-takers in Parli Pro at the state competition in April.
They met three times in Kearney and also held computer meetings to perfect their performance.
Holmes said that other states use their top team performers at nationals, or ones that perform all year together.
The teams from all states took a test and 14 teams advance to finals based on those scores. The top 10 teams are then announced.
When the Nebraska team was named second, Holmes said all the team cried out.
“We definitely weren’t expecting it,” he said Monday. It meant a lot to him, as he’d competed on the national level in 2012 also, and didn’t make the top 10.
“It was a lot of fun. I’m glad we all got to do it,” he concluded.
The team received $500 for second place.
Also attending the convention were Sandy O’Neil, FBLA sponsor, and Calen Griffin, Nebraska FBLA Vice President.
The students attended the convention June 25-July 1, with travel included.
