PeeWees split with Grant, Sutherland PDF Print E-mail

The Imperial Pee Wee team lost to Grant 18 – 6 in five innings last Wednesday in Imperial.
Grant hit well against all of Imperial’s pitchers, scoring four in the top of the first inning. Imperial answered with two, then gave up three more in the second while scoring only one, and so it went: four for Grant, two for Imperial in the third, three Grant, 0 Imperial in the fourth, and another three for Grant in the fifth.
One of the few Imperial highlights was a solo home run by Jorge Cervantes in the bottom of the fifth, but the team failed to get the other runs needed to keep the game going into the sixth inning.
Coach Larry Peterson said of the Wednesday game, “Grant hit the ball well every place we weren’t. We hit the ball too, but everything was right at someone. They showed us a couple of areas we haven’t practiced enough; one of them holding runners on.”
On Friday evening, Imperial came back with their third win of the season over Sutherland, 13–10.
Sutherland looked sharp in the first inning, bringing in three runs and stranding three more on the bases. But Imperial answered with four and added four more in the second while holding Sutherland scoreless.
A new Sutherland pitcher quieted the Imperial bats in the third and fourth while Sutherland inched back. In the bottom of the fifth, Imperial led 10–6 when Will Kuenne put a ball in the outfield for a three run single, giving the buffer need to hold off a sixth inning Sutherland surge.
The Sailors scored four before Bryce Zuege relieved Zach Space as pitcher and shut down the inning.
“We got runners on, and had some timely hits,” said Coach Peterson, “but we didn’t throw near enough strikes, and, at bat, took a called third strike way too many times. We also made some throwing errors that kept the game going longer than it needed to.”
Peterson is upbeat, however, concluding, “We’ve got tons of potential. We’re looking forward to playing Grant again because we all know we can beat them.”
The Pee Wees play next in Hershey on Wednesday this week, then have a make-up game against Ogallala Orange here on Sunday.
